For more than seven years, Make Roads Safe Hellas has been offering children (preschoolers/under 6 y.o. and gradeschoolers/ 6-12 y.o.), free of charge, an important knowledge asset for their safety on the roads – our Road Safety Educational Program for Children.

The program is offered by Make Roads Safe Hella’s partners or by the teachers themselves. It is adapted to the learning abilities and needs of children aged (a) under 6 years old, (b) 6-12 years and (c) 12-14 years.

It is also offered at the Hellenic Motor Museum, as part of schools’ group visits.

It includes a set of activities that help children to:

  • Understand traffic and the associated risks,
  • Adopt safe behavior as road users (pedestrians, cyclists, vehicle occupants),
  • Understand how they can make the right choices to avoid an accident.

Why do we need to teach children Road Safety?

Children are the most vulnerable road users because:

  • Drivers cannot easily identify them in complex traffic conditions to protect them. They are small and often adopt unpredictable behavior (e.g. quick road crossing moving between parked cars)
  • They are not aware of road risks and cannot effectively manage a threatening condition
  • Their physical development is not complete and they have less physical endurance than adults.

Children often receive wrong messages and advice from adults who undermine rather than protect their safety (e.g. asking them “… to cross the road quickly” it can ultimately surprise passing drivers who did not realize the presence of children on the road).

Structured road safety educational programs that are age-appropriate and scientifically valid can provide children with the basis to develop skills and behavioral patterns that can save their lives.

As a teacher, you can be able to implement the Program in your school. Find out how! Contact us…
